The Bramble
The Bramble cottage is a 750 sq. ft. home. Cedar board and batten outside, cathedral ceiling, and cedar and fir post and beam heritage inside.
A canopy of coastal Douglas fir and indigenous native plants shelter themBramble, large south-facing windows inviting light and passive solar thermal capture.
The Bramble’s small footprint ably manages to provide all the modern amenities and offer the comforts too – including the knowledge that the cedar and fir wood frame, walls and ceiling have been sustainably harvested from the farm and milled on-site.
The Bramble is fully insulated and air-tight, the woodstove providing heating with rounds collected from windfalls – trees that have fallen in high winds and winter storms over the years. The ceiling fan, and windows that open, help meet heating and cooling needs. These, some building supplies, as well as cabinets and cupboards were re-purposed, purchased from the non-profit society Habitat for Humanity.
It’s also worth noting that sweat equity played a big part in the conversion and retrofit, that much of the general labour and support work was done by ourselves, making this project affordable (barely!)
This was the first goat-embryo-transplant facility ever built on Vancouver Island! And the farm was originally owned by Barbara Wallace (Lynn’s mother), during the time that she was the MLA for the area and then Agricultural critic – when the Barrett government brought in the ALR
